Hello friends and loyal supporters!
Thanks to those who came out to all of last month's events. The staged readings were a hit, and the premiere of On Broadway was reported to be a blast (see further info below). I really do appreciate all your support.
On with the announcements!
Now Playing
All Rise: What if two negative black images were jailed forever? That is the question posed by my latest play, The Trial of One Short-Sighted Black Woman Versus Mammy Louise and Safreeta Mae, opening this Thursday night. I play the titular "short-sighted woman", Victoria, who has brought suit against two icons of the Jim Crow era -- women who, by virtue of their mere persistence in contemporary culture, are holding her back.
It's a solid production, with a great script, beautiful design work, insightful direction (by the illustrious Jacqui Parker), and some wonderful performances by a strong ensemble. It's a role that's emotionally difficult for me to perform, but I feel it's an important play so I'm doing it anyway. I hope you're able to see it.
The play runs for three weekends -- Thursday, May 24, 2007 through Saturday, June 9, 2007 -- in the Plaza Theater at the Boston Center for the Arts. Performances are Thu, Fri, and Sat at 8pm, with matinees on Sat and Sun at 3pm.
Check out the Roxbury Crossroads Theatre website for more info, or go to BostonTheatreScene.com to buy tickets. Tickets are $30 General Admission, $20 for seniors & students, and $10 for student rush tickets on Thursdays. I do have some comps for opening weekend. If you want one, let me know ASAP.
Typecast Again: Several of you have written to ask if that's me in "that pizza commercial" -- yes! I am in the latest Papa Gino's commercial, promoting their Triple Play Deal. Look for me as the perfect, smiling employee. And if you see it, please drop me an email and let me know, ideally with a rough idea of the time and channel you saw it on (or the show you were watching at the time).
The Little Film That Could: Thanks to everyone who made it out to the On Broadway premiere last month, and then wrote to tell me how it went. Early reports are that the premiere was lots of fun and that the film is pretty good, too. You can find videos from the premiere, as well as lots of other cool stuff -- like photos, interviews, and reviews -- at the On Broadway website: http://onbroadwaythemovie.com/. There's also a trailer on the site, and if you don't blink, you can spot me a few times (hint: I'm the one that's big as a house).
Since I was out of town for the Boston premiere, I'm still trying to arrange to see the film. The good news is, the film continues to be accepted to festivals around the U.S. and internationally, and the producers are working on a wide-distribution deal. Here's the latest festival info:
